The Algarve is best taken slowly. Three days of Atlantic coast, whitewashed fishing towns, and food that tastes of the sea — this itinerary is built for those who want to move at their own speed, with the landscape doing the work.
The first day is arrival: settling into accommodation in Lagos, Albufeira or Vilamoura, finding the beach, remembering what unhurried feels like. Day two opens up the coast — the dramatic sea caves and cathedral rocks between Lagos and Ponta da Piedade, perhaps a boat along the water to reach the Benagil cave from the sea. The Fortress of Sagres, standing on its own promontory at the corner of Europe. Dinner of cataplana or grilled fish where the catch is always fresh.
The third morning is for the Ria Formosa — the long, quiet lagoon that runs along the eastern Algarve — or a last beach, a last coffee in a harbour square. The drive back to Lisbon passes through a different Portugal: inland, agricultural, slower.
