The thirty kilometres between Lisbon and Cabo da Roca — the westernmost point of mainland Europe — contain more beauty than most regions manage in a hundred. This day traces the coast through Sintra, out to the cape, and back along the Estoril line through Cascais: three utterly different places, unified by the Atlantic light.
Sintra is the centrepiece. The hills above the town are thick with palaces — the Pena with its fantastic colours, the Regaleira with its spiral well descending into the earth, the Sintra National Palace in the town square with its two great conical chimneys. Then the road west through the pines to Cabo da Roca, where the cliffs fall to the sea and the next land is the Americas.
Cascais feels like a gentle landing after all that drama — a seaside town that was once the summer retreat of the Portuguese royal family and still carries that air of unhurried elegance. The marina, Boca do Inferno, the streets behind the main square. The coast road back to Lisbon follows the railway line all the way, the sea never far from view.
