Lisbon rewards those who walk it slowly. This day does exactly that — beginning in the old Moorish quarter of Alfama, where the streets narrow to the width of a cart and the city opens below in sudden views, then descending through the great squares of Baixa before heading west along the river to Belém.
Belém is where the Age of Discovery launched from. The Jerónimos Monastery was built to celebrate Vasco da Gama's return from India; Belém Tower stood as the last thing sailors saw as they left, and the first thing they saw on returning. The Monument to the Discoveries traces the faces of those who made the voyages possible. It is a compact but extraordinarily rich quarter — and the pastel de nata at the original Pastéis de Belém bakery, eaten with cinnamon and powdered sugar, is reason enough to make the journey.
The day is structured but unhurried, with time built in for the moments that can't be scheduled — the viewpoint that stops you, the café that calls you in.
