Central Portugal is a region of monasteries and medieval towns — places built with conviction, in stone that has outlasted the kingdoms that commissioned them. This day links four of the finest: Fátima, Batalha, Alcobaça, and Óbidos.
Fátima needs little introduction. The Sanctuary draws millions of pilgrims each year, but the basilica square has a grandeur that transcends denomination — vast, still, and strangely moving. Batalha's monastery is a masterpiece of Manueline Gothic, its unfinished chapels open to the sky as if still awaiting their roof. Alcobaça holds the tombs of Portugal's earliest kings and queens, the stone carved with a fineness that still astonishes. Óbidos ends the day gently: a walled medieval village where the main street is lined with white houses and bougainvillea, and the local cherry liqueur is served in a chocolate cup.
The route traces the spine of central Portugal, through landscapes that open and close as the hills roll past.
